Tips to Improve Your Game

The Spring season is officially here, and you may be feeling a little bit skeptical of your golf skills after the long, cold off-season. Here are a couple tips from PGA Player, Jesper Parnevik and winner of the 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Martin Laird, that you can use to improve your skills for your game:

1. Work on your drive. Your drive will drastically improve with a great posture. Martin Laird states, “You want that athletic stance-feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart. It’s not quite as low, but it’s kind of like defense in basketball.” In addition to your posture, try and make sure that you are hitting directly down the middle. Know that all of your power comes directly from your legs.

2. Create the perfect Chip Shot. Your chip shot’s goal is to drop the ball on the green with the most minimal roll that you can create. Cobra Puma Golf athlete, Jesper Parnevik explains why creating the perfect chip shot is vital to your game: “The chip is a shorter movement, but the actual posture and swing is very similar to a drive. Use more club than you think you’ll need.”

3. Know which way the grass grows. By knowing exactly which way the grass is growing, it will allow you to determine which way the ball is going to break after your shot. Parnevik explains, “Later in the day, the grass usually starts growing towards the sunset. That could cause the ball to break more that way. And if there’s water or big lakes near the green, grass tends to grow toward the water.” You will also be able to read the grass by the color and shade that it is. The darker the shade, the more into the grain that you are.

4. Perfect your putt. To create the perfect putt, make sure you have a solid stance and your shoulder width is wider. Laird explains, “Concentrate on your legs and lower half not moving at all. It should all be done with your shoulders and arms. Grip it like a tube of toothpaste with the lid off- you don’t want to squeeze the toothpaste out.”

By mastering these tips, you will be sure to improve your golf skills and have an outstanding season ahead at Shining Rock Golf Club!
